Late last week Naval Undersea Warfare Center presented Dr John Sirmalis (MAST Executive Adviser, and former Technical Director NUWC) with their coveted Decibel award.

With typical modesty, Dr. Sirmalis commented: “It truly was a surprise. Many people attended the ceremony.” Adding: “It is not surprising what one can do when surrounded by good people. I was always fortunate on that count.”

The Decibel Award, founded over sixty years ago at the Underwater Sound Lab, is presented only to distinguished scientists, engineers, and Naval Officers who have achieved distinction in the field of sonar or underwater acoustics.

It is an award conferred on those individuals whose contributions to the body of knowledge of underwater acoustics have resulted in extraordinary gains in knowledge as applicable to the needs of the U.S. Navy. It is not an award given as a mere token of esteem or recognition. The award is presented after extensive peer review of an individual’s accomplishments.
